Welcome to the wonderful world of blacksmithing!
Come and experience the wonderful world of blacksmithing at Bluefoot Forge, a purpose built workshop in the idyllic Welsh Marches.
Based in the hamlet of Stapleton (one and a half miles from Presteigne) Bluefoot Forge has 3 forges, anvils and all the tools of the trade.
It’s run by Pete Smith who has spent 40 years in the field and 10 years teaching at the National School of Blacksmithing. Pete is largely self- taught and still uses the traditional methods that have served him well over his long spanning career. During this career he has worked for all the major conservation agencies, a variety of interior and exterior designers and has become recognised as an accomplished 3D installation artist. Pete also has a Certificate of Education and was awarded a Licentiate by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths in 2013, a teaching award dating back to Queen Elizabeth I and currently held by only 12 other Smiths worldwide.
Instruction is given in a ratio of no more than 3 to 1, with clear demonstrations and 1 to 1 guidance over the finer details.
All materials are provided, as are the essential and obligatory safety glasses.
Bluefoot Forge does not offer residential courses but there is a variety of accommodation in the surrounding area.
One or three days courses are available and are tailored to the individuals taking part.
Day courses starts at 9am and ends 5pm.
There is an hour break for lunch during which you can enjoy fresh sandwiches (prepared by Pete’s wife Heather) in the kitchen or the beautiful gardens of Bluefoot Forge. You can, of course, bring your own lunch if you prefer. If you have dietary needs, Heather can accommodate them so please tell us when you book your course.
Bluefoot Lodge also offers evening classes, further details provided below.
Evening and Saturday taster sessions can be arranged, whether you are looking for an activity while on holiday or whether you are considering applying to a blacksmithing or farrier college.
A ‘crash course’ is available for students working towards their Farrier Access exams.
Price on application and conditions apply.
Full payment is required at booking, refundable if you cancel before 2 months prior to course start date. 50% is refundable if cancellation is before 1 month prior to start date. There is no cancellation refund within 1 month of start date. Should Bluefoot Forge have to cancel for any reason, the full fee will be refunded to you or another course will be arranged for a later date. Courses must be fully booked to run but fully booked courses will still run in the event of another student cancelling.
All courses start with a short health and safety talk, once that’s out of the way, you will begin the task of learning the 3,000 year old skills of the blacksmith. You will be producing artefacts from the very start so you will have tangible evidence of your newly learned skills.
